How Do You Protect Your Furniture from Damage During A Move?

Your furniture is among the most valuable belongings you have in your home. For this reason, it is imperative to always keep them out of harm's way. One way that your furniture can easily get damaged is during a house removal. Many people end up with damaged pieces of furniture perhaps because they failed to pack or wrap them the right way. Therefore, you have to prepare your furniture well for the move. Here are some of the practical ways to ensure your furniture reaches your destination damage-free.

Packing

Poor packing or wrapping of furniture is one of the major causes of damaged pieces of furniture during a move. Use as much foam padding, furniture pads or moving blankets as possible to wrap your furniture. Be as thorough as possible and make sure you cover every exposed part of your furniture. The more wrapping materials you use, the higher the level of protection will be. You can also use bubble wrap in place of the blankets.

Dismantle what you can and pack the dismantled pieces separately. For items such as beds, doing this will also make it easier to load and unload. Remove the legs from your chairs and tables if possible. That's because they are protruding parts that can easily come into contact with walls or other objects during the move, posing a risk of damage. Remember to take note of where each piece of the furniture fits to make it easier for you to reassemble later on.

Protect your drawers and cupboards by securing the drawers and any other moving or loose parts such as knobs. Casters, drawer handles, knobs etc. are all parts that can easily be dislodged during the move, resulting in damages. Remove all those pieces and pack them separately. For cabinets or drawers, lock them or wrap them shut so they don't fall or fly out along the way and become damaged in the process.

Moving and Loading

Much of the damage is most likely to occur when moving your furniture around your house and loading it into the truck. Consider investing in a furniture dolly. It will make the moving and loading of your furniture not only easier but also safer. If you don't have a furniture dolly and have to carry the furniture yourself, make sure you lift it instead of dragging it on the floor to avoid damaging both the furniture and your floors. Last, ensure the larger items are tied down in the truck so they don't topple over during the move. Furniture removalists will always be willing to help you with the moving, loading and unloading of your furniture but you need to find out if that's included in the quote.
